The Watch
The human race loves to build and create, from cave paintings to spacecraft. Humans have always taken joy in shaping the world around us. However, there is also the flip side of creation, which interests us just as much. The Bible begins with Genesis, but it concludes with the end of the Earth in the book of Revelation. Here, at Ravens Watch, we delve into the fictional works that cover those times of cataclysmic and sometimes apocalyptic change for the city of London.
Ravens
The Tower of London is famously home to a group of ravens, also known as an unkindness of ravens. They are believed to be protectors of the fortress and the kingdom. Legend says that if the ravens ever leave, the Tower and the monarchy will fall. This belief is deeply ingrained in the Tower’s history and traditions, with Charles II being the first monarch recorded to have taken measures to ensure their presence.
The bird is often seen as a bearer of bad news in literature. Edgar Allan Poe wrote the poem The Raven in 1845, and the phrase “Dark Wings, Dark Words” comes from Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin.
